About Spring Films
In 2007, while shooting for Star Cinema's Pano Kita Iibigin, lead actor Piolo Pascual and director Joyce Bernal began talking about the talents of cast member and comedienne Eugene Domingo. Their common admiration for her thespic skills led them to the conclusion that the time is ripe for the actress, who has been relegated to supporting roles in other films, to finally be launched in her own movie.
The idea to form their own production company began to take shape. They let this brew for a few months while Joyce started scouting for material for a film with Eugene. By this time other studios have also become interested in launching the comedienne, but no definitive moves have been made. It wasn’t until the following year, when Piolo was shooting another film in Bukidnon, that more concrete plans were laid out.
This time Joyce and Piolo were joined by two other good friends in the industry – acclaimed cinematographer Shayne Sarte and businessman and talent manager Erickson Raymundo. Inspired by the notion of having the freedom to produce the films they wanted when they wanted it and armed with a solid sequence treatment from Chris Martinez for their first project, Spring Films was born.
The company's name was chosen for what it represents which is not only about “the birth of the new” but more importantly, the continuity of seasons and the next phase in the growing process. As an actor for Piolo, a director for Joyce, a cinematographer for Shayne and a talent manager for Erick, this feels rightly the next step in their respective careers.
Spring is also a time for nurturing which fits the company's mission to not only provide an opportunity for growth for all film artists but to find stories that have difficulty getting greenlit in other production outfits. For while it is the group's goal to be a major industry player, the driving aim of Spring Films is to produce movies that are not only appealing to a wide audience but dare to go out of the box, present a fresh perspective and offer something new by way of story, casting or treatment through material driven pieces.
On Kimmy Dora as the Maiden Project
The birth of Spring Films will always be intricately linked to its maiden project Kimmy Dora, an outrageous comedy that launches Eugene Domingo to lead star status. It is the shared belief of Shayne, Joyce, Piolo and Erick that it is time for Eugene to shine in her own film, strongly affirmed by the overwhelming support they have received and the encouraging feedback from people in and out
of the industry.
